People, let’s walk and use escalators in peace, OK?

London: home of the Queen – love her, even though I’m not actually sure what she does – and Big Ben and…lots of stuffy underground stations. It’s also home to just about the most diverse selection of people on the planet (along with New York). On any given day in the underground you’ll see Chinese people, Americans, Africans and…you get the idea. The place is seriously cultural!

But one thing which has annoyed me, and will always annoy me, about London, is the way people can’t use escalators. Take this prime example…

I was on one the other day behind a woman holding some exhibition stands. Now, these stands were folded up, but they were still big and cumbersome. The woman clearly didn’t like them either, because she kept looking down at me and smiling in a way which said “This was my only option, honest!” I was patient at this point, as I could see that the woman couldn’t really make this situation any better. But then three people started pushing up the escalator, trying to get past her stands…

we all left the escalator about a minute later feeling A-OK…

I’m no expert on these stand things, but I do have some knowledge of exhibitions and am fairly sure that they are not cheap, so it wasn’t surprising that the woman started to get upset. They may have not even been hers. The whole thing made me angry, so I intervened…

The first man was wearing an expensive suit but behaving like a total animal. I told him off first, and he laughed at first, but quickly realised I wasn’t joking. By the time I had dealt with the other two people everyone on that escalator knew not to mess with the lady’s stands!

And it worked a treat. They backed off, left her in peace and we all left the escalator about a minute later feeling A-OK. They really ought to clone me and put me on escalators all over the world as a new kind of police force. Wouldn’t that be great?
