Transfer Terror
Anyone who has endured the horrors of public transport in London knows just how unjust the system is. Whether we are trying to use buses, trains, trams or the Underground, we poor passengers so often face long delays. We have to wait either on overcrowded platforms that soon become uncomfortably hot with the press of bodies, or outside in the freezing cold or in driving rain. But recently my rage over this was stoked when I realised that the misery of anything to do with transport extends to the very edges of London, to the airports and another form of transport – airplanes.

It should have been such good fun: a long weekend away with friends visiting Barcelona. A beautiful city with lots of artistic culture, lively nightlife and even a sunny, sandy beach. It should have been a wonderfully relaxing little holiday, and our plan was to extend the break by spending a couple of days in Scotland after returning to Britain.
This plan entailed changing planes at Heathrow Airport. Our plane from Barcelona landed on time at Heathrow Terminal 2. That’s when the horror story began. Anyone who has had to go through the nightmare of heathrow transfers probably knows exactly what happened to us next.
We had what seemed like a very reasonable fifty minutes to make our transfer to the plane to Edinburgh. We had been reassured when booking that this would be fine. Oh, no. No, no, no. We had to get to Terminal 2 through what seemed to be most of the population of the planet, following badly signed directions, walking along what we feared were endless corridors, and gradually getting more and more overheated as the minutes ticked away.
We only just made out connection
We only just made our connection, sticky and sweaty and absolutely furious with the ridiculous system at the airport. London is supposed to be a major capital city, and Heathrow is supposed to be an international airport! Why can’t they have a better transfer system? Why can’t they have better signs? Why can’t they provide buses between the terminals for passengers? Why does this always happen to me?
